DPRK mobilizes medicines after increase in deaths from rare fever

Pyongyang, May 16 (Prensa Latina) The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) ordered the stable supply of medicines after 50 people died from a fever of unknown cause, which since April developed 1.2 million citizens, media reported.

According to the local press, the country’s top leader, Kim Jong Un, discussed the issue at a meeting of the Workers’ Party and instructed to immediately release and distribute the state drug stockpiles in order to control the spread of the disease as soon as possible.

Kim said that in Pyongyang this task will be supported by the Army medical units, he criticized the slowness in supplying the population through pharmacies, as well as the work of the Cabinet and the public health sector in the face of the current health crisis.

Of all the sick people, more than 648,630 have recovered since the outbreak of the fever at the end of April and at least 564,860 are still receiving treatment.

Last week, the DPRK confirmed the detection of its first case of Covid-19 since the pandemic broke out and activated confinement to stop the spread of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

The infection was identified during the analysis of samples from several patients in the capital with fever and investigations revealed the presence of the BA.2 sublineage of the Omicron.
