The Ministry´s spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, told the press that 80 of them were wounded, 51 of whom were sent to a hospital in the city of Novoazovsk, in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).

He also added that in the last 24 hours 694 soldiers, including 29 wounded, laid down their arms in the face of Russian troops.

This Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry indicated that an agreement was reached with the representatives of the Ukrainian military blocked at the steelworks to evacuate the wounded, so a humanitarian corridor was opened.

As part of the measures to facilitate the transfer, a ceasefire regime was established in the vicinity of the site to facilitate the transfer of these people to a medical center in the locality of Novoazovsk in the DPR to provide them with all necessary assistance.

Since the end of March, the Russian and DPR forces opened humanitarian corridors for the exit of civilians and of those military personnel who lay down their arms.

In this regard, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the humanitarian operation to evacuate civilians from Azovstal was completed on May 7, thanks to “unprecedented measures” taken by Moscow with the participation of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

On April 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to cancel the assault on Azovstal and to blockade the industrial zone, from which only civilians and military personnel who agreed to lay down their arms would be allowed to leave.
