Court reviews Habeas Corpus granted to former Vice-President

Quito, May 18 (Prensa Latina) A court begins to define today whether to ratify or revoke the Habeas Corpus granted to the former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas, considered by many a political persecuted of the government.

The hearing is scheduled in the province of Santa Elena, where he was granted the appeal on April 10.

The hearing will be attended by representatives of the State Attorney’s Office and the National Service of Comprehensive Attention to Adults Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), as well as 33 people who filed amicus curiae appeals, among them, the lawyer Alembet Vera.

“Amicus in favor of Jorge Glas, politically persecuted and victim of the Ecuadorian justice and prison system that does not guarantee the right to a fair trial, personal integrity, health, or life. We are all victims when an innocent person is imprisoned”, warned the jurist on the social network Twitter.

On the other hand, the German embassy in Ecuador requested virtual access to the hearing, taking into account that the former vice-president has citizenship of that European country.

Glas was sentenced to prison for the Odebrecht and Bribery cases in 2017 after processes characterized by irregularities denounced by his defense team, since sentences applied through a repealed criminal code.

The trials against him have been criticized inside and outside Ecuador and resulted in a network of support for the former vice president.

According to reports, during this day Glas’ lawyers will also request a sentence reduction for merit.
