Some 80 soldiers of the troops who have laid down their weapons since May 16 were wounded and are being treated at medical facilities in the cities of Novoazovsk and Donetsk, in THE territory liberated from Kiev troops, Spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov, said.

On Tuesday, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the beginning of the exit of the nationalists from the Azov regiment and the Ukrainian soldiers blocked at the Azovstal plant for more than two weeks.

On April 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops to cancel the assault on Azovstal and to blockade that industrial zone, from which only civilians would be allowed to leave, as well as military personnel who agreed to lay down weapons.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, after the authorities of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk requested help to repel Kiev’s increasing attacks and intense bombing.

Previously, Moscow recognized the independence and sovereignty of both territories and signed treaties of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with their leaders, which included the establishment of diplomatic relations and military aid.

In his speech to inform about the beginning of the operation, the Russian president said that the goal is to protect the population of Donbass from Kiev’s abuses and genocide during the past eight years, in addition to “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” Ukraine.
