“The blockade of the Azovstal plant continues. The civilians who were held there by the Ukrainian nationalists were evacuated from the territory of the plant,” the head of the military portfolio said at a meeting with senior military commanders.

He said that 177 people were saved, including 85 women and 47 children, who are receiving qualified medical and psychological assistance in medical centers of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Shoigu recalled that on May 16 an agreement was reached on the withdrawal of wounded Ukrainian soldiers from the territory of the metallurgical plant, after President Vladimir Putin on April 21 ordered the cancellation of the assault on Azovstal, while instructing Russian soldiers to blockade the industrial zone.

In another part of his speech the Defense Minister reported that to date more than 1,377,000 people were evacuated from dangerous areas of the rebel region of Donbass, as well as from Ukraine, to different Russian regions.

“I would like to note that the Russian Armed Forces are doing everything possible to prevent the death of civilians, for this purpose, humanitarian corridors are working permanently,” he communicated.
