Cuba provides humanitarian care to Haitian emigrants

Havana, May 25 (Prensa Latina) Cuban authorities provided care and humanitarian aid to a group of Haitian emigrants whose boat landed on the north-central coast of the country as they were trying to reach the United States.

More than 800 people, including several minors, arrived at the coast of the municipality of Caibarien, in central Villa Clara province, where they received medical care and were transferred to a lodging facility in the nearby town of Corralillo.

According to information published on Cubadebate’s website, Cuban authorities are in contact with the Haitian Government to ensure the safe and voluntary return of these people.

By doing so, Havana is consistent with international agreements on migration of which it is a signatory.

Recently, a World Bank report pointed out that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Latin American and Caribbean economies caused a notable increase in emigration to the United States.

In the US, a regulation remains in force that allows the immediate deportation of migrants arriving on its borders, which was implemented by the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021) and maintained by the current occupant of the oval office, President Joe Biden.

Earlier this year, images of mistreatment of immigrants by US border officials with Mexico, most of them Haitians, sparked an uproar in that country and the region.
