Lebanon sets election of the Parliament´s president for next Tuesday

Beirut, May 26 (Prensa Latina) Lebanon set the election of the president and vice president of Parliament for May 31, two weeks after the holding of the legislative elections.

The session of the deputies will take place at 11:00, local time, in Nejmeh Square, seat of the unicameral body in the center of this capital, the National News Agency reported.

The name of Nabih Berri appears as the main candidate for head of the Parliament, who, if he obtains the preferences, would occupy for the seventh time the mandate since 1992.

Berri, 84 years old, leads the Amal Movement which, together with Hizbulah (Party of God) and its allies, obtained 31 seats in the elections of last May 15 to ratify the Shiite dominion in the nation. According to the constitution, the quorum required for the appointment of the president is 65 deputies and he wins if he obtains a relative majority.

According to the Naharnet site, in the race for the position of vice president are: Elias Bou Saab (Free Patriotic Movement), Ghassan Hasbani (Lebanese Forces), Melhem Khalaf (October 17 Bloc), Sajih Atiyeh (Akkar) and Ghassan Skaff (Bekaa).

On Sunday, May 15, 41% of the nearly four million Lebanese registered on the electoral roll exercised their constitutional right, amid skepticism about the emergence of a government capable of promoting the nation’s recovery.
