The Franceinfo channel quoted an official report from the Ministry of Justice, which reflects stability in the number of prisoners above 70,000, which was surpassed in March.
According to the source, 71,038 people were imprisoned on French soil on May 1, 15 less than those recorded on April 1.
When comparing the number of incarcerated between this year and 2021, it increased by 5,654 inmates, for an increase of 8,6%.
Regarding overcrowding, it also grew, since a year ago it was 107,5%. According to the Ministry of Justice report, 46 French prisons have an occupancy density of more than 150%, which is higher than 200% in facilities such as Bordeaux-Gradignan (225,4), Perpignan (214,3), Foix (213,8) and Nimes (208).
Overcrowding forces inmates to sleep on mattresses on the floor, some 1,850, Franceinfo noted.
