In an interview with Sputnik news agency, the senator said that the holders of its debt can be sure that the Eurasian nation will fulfill its obligations by repaying it in rubles, a rule that was foreseen in the event of the objective impossibility of paying it in dollars.
The US Treasury Department stated last Tuesday that it would not renew after May 25 the license allowing Russia to repay foreign debt under sanctions.
In this respect, the Russian Finance Ministry responded that despite the tightening of restrictions, it will continue meeting its public debt obligations, but payments will be made in rubles.
The head of this institution, Anton Siluanov, asserted that even if the US sanctions lead to a technical default, this “will not affect” the Russians and “nothing will change” for them.
Russia has always had the possibility to avoid default, we have the necessary resources to fulfill our obligations, the senator said, at the same time she recalled that the agreements signed by Russia state that ” it is possible to pay in currencies other than the dollar in objective circumstances”.
“Today we have the most objective circumstances, non-payment does not threaten us”, said Perminova.
She also said that she has absolute confidence in the leadership of the Finance Ministry and the Central Bank of Russia.
