He was followed, in second and third places respectively, by Laura Alberti and Senator Oscar Andrade, and among the three, the leadership body of the PCU will elect in the course of the week who will carry out the main responsibility in the future.
Among the 60 members of the Central Committee are the president of the Central Union Pit-Cnt, Marcelo Abdala, and the leaders Daniel Diverio, of the construction industry, Gabriel Molina, of communications, besides officials and representatives of base committees.
When Castillo was asked about communist candidates for the 2004 elections, for which Andrade’s name was mentioned, he answered that “we have cadres of a high level for an internal election of the Frente Amplio, later we will see if even to dispute the presidency or the mayoralties”.
He considered that “the road still seems very long but we must begin to fill it with content” and assured that this implies “defending the most humble sectors, because they are the ones who receive the impact of a right wing policy” from the government.
In this regard, he stated that “there is an alternative, it is socialism, and for the Uruguayan communists this process of socialism is called advanced democracy”.
The PCU held its XXXII Congress from April 27 to 29 with the participation of a thousand delegates, who approved the perspective of struggle for the transformation of society.
