Intellectual predicts US failure in Summit of the Americas

Paris, May 31 (Prensa Latina) The renowned Franco-Spanish journalist and writer Ignacio Ramonet considered that the 9th Summit of the Americas, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in June, is doomed to fail due to the exclusionary position taken by the United States against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

“It is evident that this summit is presented badly, and it can be said from now on that it is a diplomatic failure of the administration of President Joseph Biden, who once again disappoints with his performance,” Ramonet said in an interview with Prensa Latina.

According to Ramonet, Washington’s insistence on marginalizing Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua wastes the opportunity to organize a successful forum, with issues on the agenda such as emigration and health care.

“What (Biden) has achieved is a movement of solidarity with those countries and rejection of their position, in addition to declarations of principle such as those of the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who assured that he will not go to an exclusive summit,” Ramonet stressed.

Ramonet also highlighted the position in defense of the inclusion of the members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and of governments such as those of Bolivia and Honduras.

“I think that some 17 or 18 countries might be absent from the meeting in Los Angeles,” he commented.

He went on to state that the White House is not only organizing a Summit of the Americas headed for failure, it is also losing an opportunity on the continent to face common challenges.
