Oil embargo on Russia to affect Europe, says Russian senator

Moscow, May 31 (Prensa Latina) Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (Senate) Konstantin Kosachov said today that the partial oil embargo on this country agreed by the European Union (EU) will affect its economy and the welfare of the population.

“During Brussels summit the EU leaders successfully dealt another blow to the competitiveness of their economies and the welfare of their populations by imposing an oil embargo on Russia,” he said.

The Russian politician clarified, however, that “the restrictions will only affect oil supplies by sea,” TASS news agency reported.

According to Kosachov, two thirds of the Russian oil sent to the countries of the community block are transported in tankers, while the northern section of the Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline that goes to Poland and Germany will also be blocked.

He clarified that the remaining 10 to 11 percent goes through the south, via Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, which depend on pipeline supplies from Russia.

The Russian senator explained that an exception from the embargo was approved at the Brussels summit only for the latter countries, although he stressed that they will also be forced to refuse Russian gas supplies as soon as possible.

“After all, the voice of reason is not welcome in the EU nowadays,” he emphasized.

For the lawmaker, such decisions are related to the loss of autonomy on the part of the EU bloc and the current economic situation.

The EU summit yesterday agreed on a sixth package of sanctions against Russia that includes a postponed partial embargo on oil, the extension of the blacklist, the exclusion of Sberbank and two other national banks from the Swift system and a ban on broadcasting on EU territory to three TV channels from this country.
