Hydrometeorological situation puts western Cuba on alert

Pinar del Río, Cuba, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) The western Cuban province of Pinar del Río remains on alert in view of the hydrometeorological situation that threatens it.

Local authorities analyzed in detail the behavior of the weather and the consequences that this implies for the area, with high rainfall reports during the month of May.

As a result, the reservoirs are at 67% of their filling capacity and three of the 24 existing reservoirs are currently emptying, according to experts from the Institute of Hydraulic Resources, who added that the dams could assimilate more than 200 million cubic meters of water.

In view of the forecasts, the member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary of the political organization in Pinar del Río, Yamilé Ramos, cited as a priority the protection of local people, personal property and the economy.

It is necessary to act with speed, discipline and organization in each place, she said.

Medical brigades were sent to places of possible isolation and the departure of students from boarding schools was brought forward, while the evacuation of those living downstream from the dams and places of difficult access was guided.

The governor of the province, Rubén Ramos, called for the rapid distribution of food and its preparation in specialized centers for sale to the population.
