Panamanian organizations question process of 2024 general elections

Panama City, Jun 2 (Prensa Latina) The National Front for the Defense of Economic and Social Rights (FRENADESO) questioned the electoral process initiated in Panama ahead of the presidential elections on May 5th, 2024.

The organization issued a statement pointing out that the reforms to the Electoral Code are flawed and point to fraud at the polls, which would imply a mockery of the popular will.

The position of FRENADESO contrasts with the vision of the presiding magistrate of the Electoral Court (TE), Heriberto Araúz, who presented the call and offered guarantees of neatness, although he asked citizens to cast a responsible vote, to rule out populism and clientelism.

For the popular movement, until next July 31st there will be a key period for the registration of the so-called independent candidates, who face a series of limitations in the face of the avalanche of traditional parties.

Regarding this, they listed critical points aimed at drawing the attention of citizens to the electoral and political challenge in Panama, among which they mentioned the difficulties in establishing free candidacies.

They also point out that they changed the rules for political organizations in formation such as the Broad Front for Democracy (FAD), a political instrument of Frenadeso.

Referring to previous elections, they also questioned inequality, authoritarianism, the inefficiency of registration mechanisms and platforms that lend themselves to cheating, rigged polls, and openly biased media that give away time to candidates of their choice.
