Havana, Jun 3 (Prensa Latina) More than 73,700 people today are affected by the lack of electricity due to the damage caused to power distribution by the impact of heavy rains in western Cuba.

The greatest concentration of damage lies in the provinces of Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Havana and Mayabeque, mainly due to constant rainfall and to a lesser extent due to strong winds, which caused damage to the electrical infrastructure.

The director of Networks of the Electric Union, Eliazar Moreno, told Cuban television that some 144 groups of specialists are working in those territories to restore the damage to the service in the shortest possible time.

He explained that in Havana, for example, 24 primary distribution circuits were reported affected, which left around 24,400 customers without service, a figure that was reduced in the afternoon to just over 14,000.

Starting this morning, towns in western Cuba have reported significant rainfall as a result of a tropical low that passes through the seas in the south of the country with the potential to evolve into a more intense meteorological organism.

The island reports two deaths and one missing and damage to crops, homes, roads and production centers is quantified.

According to the Meteorology Institute, heavy rains are expected to continue in the next few hours while the system slowly moves over land in a northeasterly direction.
