Cuba alert to forecasts of active rainy season

Havana, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) Cuba maintains surveillance of the weather situation while making progress in recovering from the effects caused by intense rains that hit its territory in recent days, causing flooding in large areas.

The rainfall impacted mainly the west and center of the country, and left four dead, as well as damage to agriculture, homes and the power grid.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel directed the authorities of the provinces to maintain vigilance because the effects of the precipitations can still be felt, and above all because June will be a very rainy month, according to forecasts.

“We are going to continue working, as until now, in the recovery of the damages,” Diaz-Canel said during a work meeting at the headquarters of the National Civil Defense General Staff.

Authorities of the provinces of the west and center of the country, plus the Isla de la Juventud special municipality participated in the meeting via videoconference, with the Cuban president calling for speeding up planting and harvesting the plantations.

He also gave indications regarding the restoration of the electrical service damaged by the rainfall as soon as possible, and intensively attending the housing problem, given the damage to some 750 buildings in the 10 territories affected by the rains.

As part of the permanent activities undertaken during the hurricane season, the head of state stressed the need to continue with the work related to drainage and tree pruning.
