Kazakh President highlights value of referendum results

Nur-Sultan, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) Kazakh President Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev stressed that the favorable results of the constitutional referendum held on Sunday throughout the country will help build a new state.

After his meeting with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the Kazakh president said that Sunday’s referendum constitutes a turning point in national history.

According to this Monday’s preliminary data from the Central Referendum Commission, the amendments to the Constitution were supported by 77.18 percent of the citizens of the country, with a participation in the polls of 68.06 percent

He also indicated that among all the regions, the highest percentage of voters in favor of the amendments and additions to the Constitution was registered in the Akmola region (81.98 percent), while the lowest was reported in Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, where 65.22 percent supported the referendum.

The plebiscite was declared valid since more than half of the people called to the polls and registered on the voter lists participated. The results of the vote must be published within seven days of the vote.

More than 10,000 polling stations were opened, including 65 in 52 foreign countries, which were to be attended by more than 11.7 million registered in the electoral census, out of a population of more than 19.1 million inhabitants.

The amendments and additions to the Constitution voted this Sunday are considered approved if more than half of the citizens of at least two-thirds of the regions and cities of republican subordination vote in favor of them.
