Opposition group in Sudan refuses to attend transition meeting

Khartoum, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The decision of the opposition Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) of not attending a meeting of the trilateral mechanism for transition has had great repercussions in Sudan on Monday.

The FFC Central Council refused on Sunday to participate in the meeting on Wednesday, following the invitation to political groups supporting the coup plotters, led by General Abdel Fattah al Burhan.

“The invitation for the meeting was also extended to the military component and other forces that were allied to the former regime and now support the coup plotters,” an unidentified opposition party source was quoted as saying by the Sudan Tribune portal.

The meeting is due to take place on Wednesday at the Rotana Hotel in the capital.

The mechanism is composed of the United Nations Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.

The participation of the former ruling coalition is crucial to the success of the restoration of the democratic transition and the end of the political crisis, caused by the coup d’état on October 25, 2021.

The Forces…insisted on the need to create a proper atmosphere for the political process with the release of political detainees and an end to violence against demonstrators, which has killed nearly 100 civilians.

The boycott is the first obstacle faced by the US Assistant Secretary for African Affairs at the State Department, Molly Phee, who arrived in Khartoum, the capital, on Sunday
