UN concern over cuts to development aid

United Nations, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, today described as alarming signs shown by some countries of making deep cuts to Official Development Assistance.

Through his official Twitter account, Guterres indicated that such a decrease would be a significant reversal of the previously agreed commitments.

Faced with this problem, Guterres urged those nations to reconsider their cut projections, given the terrible consequences it would have on the lives of the most vulnerable.

Since May, UN authorities began to sound the alarms due to the decrease in development aid budgets, from which money was taken with the aim of financing the response to the conflict in Ukraine.

In a statement, the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, was “deeply concerned” about these measures and the impact they may have on the most vulnerable people.

Precisely, she reminded her, the war in Ukraine has serious consequences at the international level, with a sharp rise in food prices and an energy crisis that add to the problems arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This is exactly the moment that requires countries and the United Nations system to respond to the growing humanitarian and development needs by offering additional resources,” she stressed.

In recent weeks, several countries, including the United States, have redirected funds from their development aid programs to finance their military aid to Ukraine.

Diplomatic sources point out that Norway and Sweden are other nations that are also considering taking such measures.
