Fernando Hiraldo, resident coordinator of the UN in the country, recalled Haiti’s vulnerability, constantly suffering the painful consequences of the degradation of ecosystems, the disappearance of biodiversity and climate change, among other problems.
“Faced with a situation like this, it is no longer a matter of holding the line, of sparing efforts. It has become a mission, and even a responsibility towards ourselves, towards our communities, towards the earth that we must safeguard all coast,” the representative said.
He also pointed out that the Unites Nations supports the efforts of national authorities, as well as civil society organizations in the adoption and application of policies and mechanisms to protect the environment.
Hiraldo underlined the urgency of strengthening the resilience of communities, promoting and investing in green, renewable and sustainable energies, in addition to caring for ecosystems and biodiversity, while reinforcing waste management and recycling infrastructures.
In Haiti, soil erosion and landslides related to deforestation, increased pollution and waste due to urbanization, and a series of natural disasters have caused ecosystem deterioration, and the effects of climate change are more visible climate.
This scenario affects food insecurity, which currently affects more than 4.4 million people, aggravating poverty and migration.
