Henry, who is in Los Angeles, United States, to attend the ninth Summit of the Americas, pointed out that his administration is working to favor the struggle undertaken by the press for access to justice, democracy and the rule of law.

He also praised the courage, passion and determination of journalists in the region in the pursuit of information and truth, according to a message posted on Twitter.

In Haiti the union faces numerous challenges to fulfill its mission as the security climate deteriorates, and armed gangs increasingly exert control over the territories.

So far this year at least three communicators have been killed, two of them at the hands of gangs operating in Laboule 12, an affluent neighborhood southwest of Port-au-Prince, and the other apparently by a police gunshot while covering a demonstration by textile workers.

Since 2018 at least seven journalists have been killed in Haiti, and so far the authorities offered no details of the investigation, while those responsible remain unpunished.
