Ukrainian war threatens unprecedented hunger, misery wave worldwide

United Nations, Jun 8 (Prensa Latina) The world is currently facing the risk of an unprecedented wave of hunger and misery, by threatening to spark off a social and economic chaos, UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres warned on Wednesday.

During the presentation of the 2nd Report of the Global Crisis Response Group, goal-oriented to the effects of the Ukraine war, the document read no country or community will be bypassed by this cost-of-living crisis.

Mr. Guterres stressed food prices are close to record highs and fertilizer prices have more than doubled, the shortage of which will spread from corn and wheat to all staple crops, including rice, with a devastating impact for thousands of millions of people in Asia and South America.

In this regard, he stressed If “this year’s food crisis is also linked to a lack of access” to food, “the lack of food could be a problem next year,” Guterres was quoted as saying by Agerpres.

For the United Nations, the core consequences of the critical world situation are the high electricity rates, which generate blackouts and fuel shortages globally, especially in Africa.

The UNSG also referred to the present financial situation that damages a great number of developing countries, in addition to the risk of debt default and economic collapse caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, inequality of the recovery as well as the climate crisis.
