UN chief attends Summit of the Americas’ plenary session

United Nations, Jun 9 (Prensa Latina) UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is participating on Thursday in the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, the United States, an event widely criticized for the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

According to the Office of the Spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General, Guterres is in the plenary session, to which leaders of some countries of the region, such as Mexico and Honduras, decided not to attend.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that his absence is due to the fact that not all States of the region were invited to the Summit.

Commenting about the issue, he called to change the policy of exclusion that has been imposed for centuries by those who seek to dominate and do not respect sovereignty.

From my point of view, said the president, they are acting with hatred and do not want the brotherhood of the peoples.

For her part, Honduras’ President Xiomara Castro questioned the legitimacy of the Summit due to the refusal by the organizing country to invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in Havana on Wednesday that Washington lacks understanding of the problems and needs of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The peoples of these countries have accumulated thirst for justice, suffer underdevelopment and growing inequality, and can no longer tolerate the continuous theft of their natural wealth and the exploitation of their workers, he stressed.

Diaz-Canel insisted that the action plan drawn up at the regional meeting will not be in keeping with the urgencies of the area, nor will it seek a solution to problems such as irregular migration, the fight against climate change, inequality and expressions of discrimination.

The exclusion of countries of the region from the 9th Summit of the Americas has generated several criticisms and leaders of the region have expressed their solidarity with Cuba, after recognizing that the island would have much to contribute to the meeting organized in Los Angeles.
