Beijing postpones reopening of schools due rise of Covid-19 cases

Beijing, Jun 11 (Prensa Latina) Beijing, the capital of China, today postponed until further notice the reopening of schools after confirming 115 cases of Covid-19 among customers and workers in a bar.

According to municipal authorities, the decision was taken to avoid the risk of infection and will determine a new date depending on the evolution of the epidemiological situation.

Beijing closed schools and kindergartens on April 29 and planned to reopen them next Monday, after declaring under control the Covid-19 outbreak that kept it semi-paralyzed until the beginning of this week.

So far, only ninth grade students who do not live in areas with contagious outbreaks of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (the cause of the disease) will return to school.

The rest of the elementary and high school students will continue with online instruction.

According to the local government, 7, 059 close contacts of the sick are under quarantine, some neighborhoods in Chaoyang district will be under confinement for the next 10 days and their residents will have to undergo PCR tests today, tomorrow and Monday.

Apart from the Chinese capital, Shanghai is also experiencing a new outbreak of Covid-19 cases and has again resorted to mass screening and isolation to curb the virus.

Overall, China has accumulated at least 18,413 deaths and 3,320, 069 confirmed cases in its mainland, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan since the emergence of the disease and the coronavirus that causes it in December 2019.
