No date for Sweden and Finland to join NATO

Brussels, Jun 13 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stoltenberg, said today that there is no date for reaching an agreement to allow Sweden and Finland to join the bloc.

According to Stoltenberg, several NATO member countries are involved in the decision, so it is impossible to say when everything will be settled, Brussels radio reported Monday. A hypothetical delay in the process would not necessarily mean a security problem for Sweden and Finland, said Stoltenberg, who believes that both are in a better position now than before they applied to join the alliance.

Many allies such as the United States and the United Kingdom have given Sweden security assurances, Stoltenberg said, adding that NATO is conducting joint military exercises in the Scandinavian area.

The joint decision by Sweden and Finland to end decades of non-alignment and apply for NATO membership, formalized in mid-May, is a step that could trigger dangerous situations for the North European region and the Baltic Sea, the Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly warned.
