Detention of indigenous leader denounced in Ecuador

Quito, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) Leaders of social organizations denounced the arrest of the president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Leonidas Iza, on the second day of a national protest against the government.

As evidenced in images published in social networks, Iza was arrested by police and Armed Forces in Cotopaxi, one of the provinces where road closures have been taking place since the day before.

After being arrested on suspicion of committing crimes, as declared by the National Police, he was transferred to the unit of flagrancy of the Attorney General’s Office in the capital’s downtown.

The incident was denounced by several social collectives, among them Conaie, which called its organizational structure to radicalize the de facto measures for the freedom of its maximum leader and for the dignity of the indigenous struggle.

According to the Confederation, Iza was arrested in a violent, illegal and arbitrary manner.

The Andean parliamentarian, Virgilio Hernandez, also expressed disagreement with the police action and warned: “the clumsy and illegal detention of Leonidas Iza only demonstrates the inability to dialogue on the part of the Government of the Meeting that responds with persecution and repression instead of answers to the demands of the Conaie”.

For the Fundación Regional de Asesoría en Derechos Humanos (Inredh), the government is mistaken in its strategy to control the strike initiated the day before in several points of the country.

In their opinion, the arrest will only provoke greater indignation and could lead to a wave of violence.

Meanwhile, President Lasso informed through a video the beginning of the arrest of intellectual and material authors of vandalism and violent acts during the first day of protests demanding answers from the executive to sensitive issues for the population.
