The Lebanese president briefed the American diplomat about the country’s united position regarding the demarcation of sea borders and called on Hochstein to receive swift responses from Tel Aviv.
According to the pan-Arab channel Al Mayadeen, Aoun presented a new proposal to the American mediator in which he called for the preservation of the entire Qana field and the adhesion to oil resources, even beyond Line 23.
Lebanon is interested in beginning the exploration process and reiterated to Hochstein the commitment with the resumption of indirect negotiations with Israel on territorial limits.
Local reports detail that between Lebanon and Israel there is an area of some 860 square kilometers rich in oil and gas in dispute, according to maps presented by both countries at the United Nations.
During past talks, the Lebanese delegation presented a new map that advocated for 1,430 additional kilometers, something that prompted Israel to suspend negotiations.
Indirect meetings started in October, 2020, sponsored by the United Nations and mediated by the US. Five rounds of negotiations were held until May, 2021.
