Ecuador’s National Union of Educators to protest against gov’t

Ecuador, educadores, protesta
Quito, Jun 16 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador's National Union of Educators (UNE) on Thursday convened a day of protests to demand the implementation of salary equalization approved by Parliament.

The actions will add to the national strike led by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) since Monday, to which several social organizations, labor and student unions have already joined.

The UNE calls the national government to stop delaying the publication in the Official Registry of the reform to the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI) and implement the salary equalization included in the amendments to the law.

During the mobilization, the teachers will also demand budget for education and health, generation of jobs, moratorium on debts in public and private banks and cooperatives, among others.

UNE’s mobilization is preceded by several days of marches of university students in Quito and other cities in Ecuador.

On Wednesday, young people marched in Quito and Cuenca, where there were reports of incidents with the police.

Today marks the fourth consecutive day of popular protests initiated by the CONAIE to demand the Government responses on a 10 sensitive-point agenda for the national working class.
