Entry into force of Haiti’s new penal code postponed

Port-au-Prince, Jun 23 (Prensa Latina) The Haitian Government has postponed the entry into force of the penal code decreed in 2020 by assassinated President Jovenel Moïse and lacks the approval of the National Assembly, Le National newspaper reported on Thursday.

Following a Council of Ministers on Wednesday, the Executive decided to extend its implementation for two other years, which will allow the analysis of the law, the newspaper revealed.

The criminal law has been controversial since its disclosure with massive protests from the religious sector, while several unions expressed their reservations for allegedly allowing amnesty to those accused of corruption, political and financial crimes.

More recently, the main criticisms focused on the lack of conditions for its implementation, the lack of analysis of the text by experts and the absence of popular consultation.

The penal code was the result of several decades of study by analysts to modify the current set of laws, which dates back to 1835, and was shelved in Parliament for several years.
