In his message on Peace Day, he recalled that the world is now facing the highest number of violent conflicts since 1945.
The Ukraine War is shaking the international order and influencing the destabilization of economies in many developing countries, he stressed.
Amid this context, Guterres continued, prevention is more vital than ever and there is an urgent need to address the root causes of conflict, protect vulnerable communities and strengthen social cohesion.
Guterres noted that he recently proposed a New Agenda for Peace, with conflict prevention at its core.
Peacebuilding is the raison d’être of the United Nations, he noted, and spoke about this organization’s numerous efforts in this regard.
For example, he said that the Peacebuilding Fund has been one of the most effective instruments for supporting populations affected by conflict.
