UN Secretary General warns about the need to protect oceans

Lisbon, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, on Monday warned about the inability of humans to protect the oceans and how damage to these ecosystems will have a domino effect on the 2030 Agenda of this international organization.

Speaking at the 2nd United Nations Oceans Conference that began Monday in the Portuguese capital, Guterres said it will be impossible to have a healthy planet without a healthy ocean.

Unfortunately we are facing an Ocean Emergency, we must change course, he said, while recalling the impact of global warming on ocean temperatures; creating fiercer and more frequent storms.

He also noted that sea levels are rising and low-lying island nations are facing flooding, as many of the world’s major coastal cities.

The UN secretary-general lamented that the climate crisis is also acidifying the ocean, disrupting the marine food chain and coral reefs are dying.

He said that coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses and wetlands, are degrading and land pollution has created vast coastal dead zones.

Referring to the human actions that lead to all these situations, Guterres recalled that nearly 80 percent of sewage is discharged into the sea without treatment and some eight million tons of plastic waste enters the oceans each year.
