Over 300 extremists handed over their weapons to the Nigerian army

Abuja, Jun 30 (Prensa Latina) Over 300 fighters of extremist groups surrended and handed over their weapons to the Nigerian army in the town of Bama, in the northern state of Borno, military organizations reported on Thursday.

The headquarters of the national army disclosed on social media that this occurred after an offensive in the northern part of this country against Boko Haram radicals and the Islamic State West Africa Province.

It also reported that during operations, governmental forces freed 12 farmers who had been kidnapped by terrorist elements.

According Defense Media Operations Director, Bernard Onyeuko, large caches of weapons and military equipment were recovered during the raids carried out by regular troops on several occasions.

Amid a spike in violence, for several months the army has been carrying out coordinated actions against radical groups and bandits from several parts of the country such as the northern states of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara.

According to official data, as a result of violence by extremist and criminal elements, more than 7,600 civilians have been killed in populated areas in Nigeria in the period 2020-2021, whereas hundreds of others have been displaced.
