Unemployment in Brazil falls 9.8 percent in second quarter

Brasilia, Jun 30 (Prensa Latina) The unemployment rate fell in Brazil to 9.8 percent in the quarter ending in May compared to the previous one and for the first time below double digits since 2016, the government reported today.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (BIGS), this is the lowest canon recorded since the quarter ending in January 2016, when it stood at 9.6 percent.

It is the smallest since 2015, for periods closed in May, when it resulted at 8.3 percent.

The new indicator also represents a decrease of 4.9 percentage points compared to the same stage in 2021, but with 10.6 million unemployed.

The number of unemployed decreased by 11.5 percent (minus 1.4 million people) compared to the previous quarter and by 30.2 (minus 4.6 million) in the annual comparison.

These data are part of the National Continuous Household Sample Survey.

In the previous survey, referring to the quarter ending in April, the unemployment rate was 10.5 percent, reaching 11.3 million people. At the minimum of the historical series, recorded in 2014, it reached 6.5.
