Prime Minister of Belize insists on the US lifting blockade on Cuba

Paramaribo, Jul 4 (Prensa Latina) Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño insisted on the need for the United States to lift the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba more than 60 years ago.

Briceño also described this policy as illegal during his speech at the opening on Sunday of the 43rd Summit of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), based in this capital.

The prime minister called for the celebration of diplomatic relations between the member countries of this bloc and Havana, ties that will turn five decades old at the end of the year.

The 61-year-old Belizean politician said at the opening of the summit that concludes on Tuesday that this historic milestone calls them to call for the lifting of the illegal blockade imposed on Cuba. The regional summit is being held on the basis of an agenda of common interest, in which the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the region, advances in food and nutritional security, concerted actions stand out as the most important issues to face climate change, and support for the implementation of a common market and economy.

The summit inaugurated the head of State of Suriname, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, as president pro tempore of CARICOM, a position in which he will succeed Briceño, who held that responsibility since January 1.

Briceño defended regional integration during his administration at the head of the community, as well as the common position of the member countries before the international community.
