Witness testifies in trial against former Israeli prime minister

Tel Aviv, Jul 6 (Prensa Latina) A witness revealed in a trial that former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded expensive gifts from two businessmen while he was in office.

Hadas Klein, the main witness in the “thousandth case”, returned to the stand this Wednesday as part of the trial against the now head of the opposition for fraud and breach of trust.

According to the complaint, Netanyahu received large quantities of cigars and champagne between 2011 and 2016, while his wife Sara obtained jewelry.

Prosecutors say gifts were given by tycoons Arnon Milchan and James Packer in exchange for favors.

Klein, assistant to both businessmen, admitted at the trial that she was in charge of providing these products for years and denied the defense by stating that on several occasions the politician demanded gifts.

“Milchan once told me that “these numbers are starting to get out of control, tell (Netanyahu) that our accountant is starting to ask questions,”” he recounted.

The prosecution alleges that Netanyahu acted in favor of Milchan on three issues, including the politician’s intervention before then-US Secretary of State John Kerry to extend the Israeli businessman’s visa.

He also asked then-finance minister and current interim head of government, Yair Lapid, to extend the tax exemption in his favor and worked to promote a merger of two television channels at the request of Milchan.
