WHO intensifies response to malnutrition crisis in the Horn of Africa

Geneva, Jul 7 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday ratified it´s coordinating to intensifying response to counteract the looming malnutrition crisis in the Greater Horn of Africa.

Among its actions is sending aid where it is most urgently needed, giving population access to health services and contributing to helping nations for different outbreaks including cholera, measles and malaria, WHO says.

The WHO -according to public information- complements essential health services in affected areas, focused on sexual and reproductive health, treatment to chronic infections, as well as the mental health services.

Millions of people living in the Greater Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Somalia) are currently facing acute malnutrition, as one of the worst droughts in recent decades hits the region, worsened by years of conflict, instability and Covid-19.

Specialists describe food insecurity as a quite serious situation and, consequently, state that many families leave their homes in search of food and water, and also food for animals.

Infectious disease outbreaks -they warned- should concern and involve world leaders, especially when combining with low vaccination campaign and the available health services. Pll/jha/znc
