The Israeli Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories (B’Tselem) considered a farce the opening of an investigation into the death last April of Muhammad Assaf, 34, who was fatally shot in the chest.
In any case, whether or not an inquiry is opened, we can expect the final result to be the same: “no one will be held accountable for the murder and the policy of using lethal force against Palestinians will continue unhindered,” the group denounced on Twitter.
According to various media outlets and NGOs, Israeli soldiers killed more than 60 Palestinians, including women, minors and the elderly, in the first half of the year.
Earlier this month, the UN Human Rights Office in the Occupied Territories also criticized the military’s violence.
“Many of the monitored cases indicated that Israeli troops used lethal force in a manner that appears totally inconsistent with international human rights law,” it warned.
