Jan. 6 committee accuses Trump of inciting extremists to attack Capit

EEUU, legislaodres, Trump, capitolio
Washington, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) US lawmakers on Tuesday accused former President Donald Trump of inciting a mob of followers to attack the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in a last-ditch bid to remain in power as Congress was formally certifying the then-president´s election loss.

On Tuesday, in video testimony shown by the House of Representatives committee investigating the riot, witnesses described a loud late-night six-hour meeting on Dec. 18, 2020, where Trump disregarded White House staffers who urged him to concede the Nov. 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden.

The committee heard testimony from former spokesperson for the far-right group Oath Keepers and also part of the statement from then-White House counsel Pat Cipollone, who past Friday met with members of the parliamentary group for eight hours.

To prove Trump’s intention, the representatives relied on documents gotten from the National Archives referring to a Trump tweet he never sent posting: “I will make a big speech on January 6 (…) Arrive early, crowds are expected to come. March to the Capitol afterwards. Stop robbery!!”

The panel also revealed that Trump administration´s high-ranking officials claimed the mogul personally tried to use federal government to take over voting machines in an effort to overturn his 2020 loss.

Similarly, witnesses in a video detailed how in a December 2020 meeting, Donald Trump ignored some advisers´ standpoints and was guided by those who suggested insisting on unfounded claims of electoral fraud.

Republican Liz Cheney, member of the commission, said former president’s allies are trying to blame “nuts” in Trump’s orbit for his actions. She initially intended to deny and delay the work of this committee, stressed Cheney, for whom Trump´s followers´ strategies is to say he was manipulated by others outside the administration and was unable to tell the good from the bad.

While the panel cannot bring legal charges against Trump, its central mission has been to uncover full scope of his attempt to stop transfer of power and to connect his efforts to violence on Capitol Hill.
