The confirmation of the attack was given to the Sputnik agency by a spokesman of the civil military administration of Energodar, city where the plant is located, and which was taken by the Russian forces in the first days of the special military operation in Ukraine.

“At 00:26 today (GMT+3), two attack drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched two 120-millimeter shells on a building located in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The roof and windows of the building were damaged. There were no casualties,” the official explained.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is currently under the control of the Russian Armed Forces.

The Eurasian nation’s Foreign Ministry claimed that the protection of the plant, operated by a Ukrainian company, is aimed at preventing leakage of nuclear and radioactive materials.

After the beginning of Moscow’s military operation in Ukrainian territory on February 24, Russian forces took control of two of the five nuclear power plants located in that country.

Due to its importance, and despite being deactivated, the first to be taken over was Chernobyl, scene of the most serious nuclear accident in the history which took place on April 26, 1986, and Zaporizhzhia, which is currently in service and is the largest in Europe.

In this regard, on April 2, the Russian government confirmed to the International Atomic Energy Agency that its forces had withdrawn from the Chernobyl plant, and that it had handed over control of the plant to Ukrainian personnel.
