Homicides in Uruguay increase

Uruguay, homicidios, aumento
Montevideo, Jul 13 (Prensa Latina) Uruguay on Wednesday closed statistically the first semester of 2022 with a rise of 188 homicides that account for a 39.5 percent more compared to the same period of 2021.

At the same time, it meant an increase of 8.7 percent compared to 2019, the last year of the previous government of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio-FA), a reference to which the current authorities alluded for political gain purposes.

During 2020 and 2021, decreases in crimes were reported, what the right-wing coalition government credited to its management, while the left-wing force attributed it to the reduction in mobility due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Interior Minister Luis Alberto Heber acknowledged the latter during a press briefing, when he announced the number of murders occurred in the first half of the year, 94 of which were related to conflicts among criminal groups, drug trafficking and settling of scores.
