Colombia tops agenda at UN Security Council

ONU, Consejo, Seguridad, Colombia, agenda
United Nations, Jul 14 (Prensa Latina) The numerous challenges the peace process in Colombia faces are addressed at the UN Security Council on Thursday, while expectations are growing for the future Government of Gustavo Petro.

As scheduled, Carlos Ruiz Massieu, head of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, reports on the recent developments and presents the UN secretary-general’s report, which covers the events occurred from March 26 to June 27.

Francisco de Roux, president of Colombia’s Truth Commission, is also expected to provide details on this issue.

Recently, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed his support for the transitional justice system in that country, from which the Truth Commission is a fundamental component.

With support for the UN, a follow-up committee is now planned to establish for the implementation of the recommendations made in the final report of the Truth Commission, released on June 28.

Precisely, this Thursday’s meeting at the Security Council takes place in a context of eminent changes in Colombia’s political landscape, after Gustavo Petro, of the left-wing Historical Pact coalition, was elected as president of that nation.

This is the first time in the country’s history that a left-wing leader will become a president when he takes office on August 7, while his running mate, Francia Marquez, will become the first Afro-Colombian woman elected vice-president.
