European Union warns about the danger of drought

Brussels, Jul 18 (Prensa Latina) A part of the territory of the European Union (EU) is at risk of drought, while some areas are at a warning level of 46 percent and others on alert, a report warned on Monday.

According to a research published by the European Commission (EC), Spain has one of the most affected areas whose water volumes are lower than 31 percent of the avergae of the past ten years.

The report, drafted by the EC’s Common Research Center indicated that, in Portugal, hydropower in reservoirs is at half of the average of the past seven years.

Both nations have favorable conditions for the occurrence of forest fires, the Drought in Europe-July 2022 document warns.

It indicates that in the countries exposed to very high levels of drought, heat and water stress reduce the yielding of crops from negative perspective for cereals and other plantations.

Spain, France, Romania, Portugal and Italy will have to face this reduction of crop yielding, but Germany, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia and Croatia will also be affected, the research notes.

Regarding Italy, the report indicates that an emergency state was declared due to drought in five regions, and the insufficient water availability causes multiple use restrictions in the municipalities.

France took similar measures to restrict water use.
