“On September 1st the arrival of the medical brigades is scheduled, this month an agreement will be signed with the Ministry of Health (of Cuba) so that this long-awaited visit and Cuban support in the field of health will be as soon as possible,” said the Honduran diplomat at the time.

The presence of Cuban health specialists in Honduras dates back to 1998, when then President Fidel Castro created the Integral Health Program after the passage of Hurricane Mitch through Central America, considered the worst natural disaster to hit that region in the last two centuries.

The Cuba’s professionals offered their services in remote and difficult-to-access areas, where historically there is little or no presence of health personnel.

In 2020, a brigade of 25 Cuban aid workers arrived in Honduras to assist the victims of tropical storms Eta and Iota, who a few months later concluded their work with the recognition of the population and the authorities, while the National Congress conferred on them the Honorary Order of the Commander’s Cross.
