Mexico is withstanding pressures in defense of its oil

Mexico City, Jul 22 (Prensa Latina) President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador reiterated on Friday that he will withstand pressures in defense of oil as a national property and insisted that Mexico is not violating the treaty with the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

At his morning press briefing from Jalisco, the president slammed Mexican sellouts that support foreign companies in illegal lawsuits against the nation using the T-MEC.

He told the Mexican people that they should not worry as Mexico has not violated the consultation process with the US and Canadian governments.

He recalled that since the negotiation on the T-MEC, his government has been careful not to compromise oil, which stalled the dialogue as the previous administration of Enrique Peña Nieto had given it away to foreign companies.

At that time, Lopez Obrador was president-elect and warned that if the treaty was signed he would veto it as soon as he took office, and they asked negotiator Jesus Seade to come to Mexico to analyze the chapter already approved by the government because they did not agree with it.

He admitted that US negotiators got upset, left the table and threatened that if they did not agree with it bad things would happen, but Mexicans did not give in and the US had to eventually change the chapter taking into account the terms laid out by Mexico so that there was no doubt to whom the oil belonged.

They explained to US negotiators that previous treaties were signed by neoliberal administrations sold to foreign capital, and they would not give away national resources as the people had elected the new government to change that situation.
