Russia denounces increase of Daesh members in Afghanistan

Moscow, Jul 28 (Prensa Latina) The number of Daesh terrorists, self-styled Islamic State, tripled in Afghanistan after the takeover of the Taliban movement, the director of the Asia department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Zamir Kabulov said.

At a press conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya media group, the diplomat said that when the Taliban came to power the number of members of the Islamic State was 2,000, however, preliminary figures indicate that to date the number has risen to 6,000.

This is the most negative aspect of the development of the situation in Afghanistan, because Daesh members, as before, seek to destabilize not only the country itself, but also its neighbors,” Kabulov stressed.

Earlier, acting Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan Vladimir Norov criticized the insufficient attention of the international community to the post-war development in Kabul and its consequences for the population.

Norov emphasized that resolving the situation in Afghanistan, establishing a lasting peace and creating conditions for stable social and economic development in this country is a key factor in ensuring security and sustainable development in the vast Eurasian space.

Afghanistan remains mired in a deep crisis after two decades of armed conflict between the Taliban movement and the governments that relied on the military support of the United States and other NATO countries.

In mid-August 2021, the Taliban seized the capital, Kabul, precipitating the flight of President Ashraf Ghani and in early September formed an interim government led by Mohammad Hassan Akhund, one of the founders of the insurgent group.
