In statements reported by the newspaper Il Giornale, the Minister described the new formation as moderate and Draghinian, in reference to the line of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who resigned on July 21 in the midst of an acute political crisis.
“It is a reformist party that looks closely at innovation, ecology, youth and social issues,” Di Maio said, “we do not want to talk to extremists,” referring mainly to the 5 Star Movement (M5S), according to analysts.
According to Di Maio, who left the penta-star movement in mid-July due to differences with its leadership, after the end of the holiday period, days before the September 25 elections, “Italians will realize what happened with the Draghi government”.
They will find, he said, a political scenario divided in two, extremism on the one hand and the zone that we can define as Draghian on the other, and in the first group, besides M5S, he contemplates the right-wing parties Brothers of Italy, the League and Forza Italia.
In the opinion of observers, the 36-year-old politician loses sight of the broad favoritism of the ultra-right coalition formed by the last three groups, which is consolidating and increasing its chances of winning in the face of an increasingly divided left.
For his part, the leader of the Democratic Center, Bruno Tabacci, expressed that “this is not a random operation”, “Luigi is younger than my sons, so there is a generational relay, an investment in the future”, with Europeanism as “a beacon for both of us”.
