When signing the document the day before at the Ministry of Education (Meduca), with which they committed to put an end to the strike and return to the classrooms as from Tuesday, with the exception of areas of difficult access, the teachers’ organizations specified the ways to recover the academic contents.

In this sense, they specified that classes corresponding to the second semester will be extended until October 7 and the third term will be from October 10 to December 30 of this year. Graduations will take place between January 2 and 6, 2023.

For their part, Meduca and the Panamanian Institute of Special Qualifications (IPHE) stated that they will not take reprisals against the personnel who participated in the demonstrations. The Minister of Education, Maruja Gorday, also ratified that in order to comply with some 22 agreements reached in conversations in the province of Cocle between various popular organizations and the Government, a technical follow-up table for educational matters will be set up on August 13.

Among these agreements is the allocation of 5,5% of the Gross Domestic Product for the sector in the 2023 budget, while for the 2024 fiscal year, the government committed to allocate 6%.

“We are going to the classrooms to assist our students,” Fernando Ábrego, secretary general of the Teachers’ Association and one of the leaders of the work stoppage, said.
