Solidarity groups in US ask Biden to remove Cuba from terror list

Washington, Aug 4 (Prensa Latina) The Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO-Pastors for Peace) urged United States President Joe Biden to remove Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

In an open petition for signature on the Internet, the group expressed concern to the Democratic leader about his policies on Cuba, which it considers more aligned with those of his Republican predecessor, Donald Trump (2017-2021), than with those of Barack Obama (2009-2017).

The letter recalled Biden that these policies harm the well-being of the Cuban people and that, while his recent easing of restrictions on travel and remittances is helpful, it is still insufficient.

According to IFCO, “a positive and principled measure that you (Biden) could easily implement is to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.”

During Trump’s last days in the Oval Office, then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo included Cuba in that list, from which the Obama-Biden administration has removed Cuba in 2015.

Being on the list, Cuba is subject to international sanctions and financial restrictions that limit the nation’s ability to conduct transactions, including those necessary to advance its efforts to combat the Covid-19 pandemic and revive its economy, the petition argued.

Far from supporting terrorism, Cuba has a long history of providing health care and saving lives around the world, Pastors for Peace stated
