Theft of medicines in Panama’s public healthcare system denounced

Panama, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) Medicines from Panama's Caja de Seguro Social (CSS), intended to improve the health of the insured people, end up in private stores, the newspaper La Prensa denounced.

The CCS itself, according to the newspaper, reported on July 29 that as a result of an investigation by the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the western province of Veraguas, medicines belonging to the institution were seized from shelves as they were available for sale in a private pharmacy.

According to the newspaper, it has been a recurrent problem in the last years, having an impact on the shortage of medicines reported by the institution, which is in the spotlight of a single table of dialogue between the Executive and social organizations in protest against the high cost of living.

In September 2021, according to La Prensa, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, together with the National Police, carried out raids in stores, pharmacies and clinics in the provinces of Panama and West Panama to fight the theft of medical supplies from the CSS.

In the operation, authorities arrested 11 people, including several officials from the state institution.
