The original initiative, presented in 2020 by incumbent House of Representatives Speaker Ope Pasquet, had coincidences with that from another team headed Luis Gallo, from Frente Amplio, which opened a negotiation process to draw up a common text.

Both political forces agreed on the objective of “regulating and guaranteeing people’s right to spend the process of dying with dignity, in the circumstances determined by them.”

It recognizes it to “all chronic, incurable and irreversible health actions that seriously impair their quality of life, causing suffering that is unbearable.”

Moreover, it explains the specific steps to be followed to make the free request, the medical judgments and opinions, the time limits, the palliative care options and the respect for professional conscientious objections.
